At Hollyburn, providing quality rental housing has been our business for over 40 years. You might say we know a thing or two about how to rent an apartment! Currently, Hollyburn Properties owns and operates 76 rental apartment communities across Canada – 49 in Vancouver, 6 in Calgary, 19 in Toronto, and 2 in Ottawa.
We also have a responsibility to educate the public on the ins and outs of tenancy, as well as best practices that we have gleaned over the past 4 decades in this industry. For the second year now, we have offered a crash course to high-school students at King George Secondary on all things rental. Hollyburn has supported a long-term community partnership with City School at King George Secondary, an alternative, interactive mini-school program that utilizes the “city as their classroom.”
One of our senior property managers and building resident managers led the session in an apartment suite in Vancouver’s West End. Students were toured through the building to look at available amenities, laundry, garbage and recycling areas, parking and emergency exits, as well as through the apartment while conducting a mock “suite inspection report.” The course was then followed by an active Q & A.
Some of the items we covered:
- Applications for tenancy
- Credit checks
- Tenancy agreements
- Security deposits
- Landlord & renter’s responsibilities and rights
- How to set up hydro, tenant insurance, cable & wifi
- Maintenance requests
- Pet policies
- Move-in & out policy
- Expectations
- …And much more!
Overall, the feedback was amazing! The students had a great time and learned a lot of new information, much of which they were not aware of before (for example, City by-laws around noise restriction.)
